BELLANGÉ, Joseph Louis Hippolyte (1800 – 1866). Grande réussite en Couer! Paris: Gihaut Brothers, [ca. 1828]. Lithograph bearing an image of a French street scene wherein a military man intently observes the performance of an older conjuror standing closely in front of him, the magician’s apparatus resting on a table and chairs nearby, as another short and stocky man dressed as a clown picks the spectator’s pocket from behind. Trimmed to 10 ¾ x 8”, under larger hinged mat. Old mounting remnants to verso. Minor soiling and wear. Sold with: “Scene from the Drury Lane Pantomime,” engraved illustration by David Henry Friston from The Illustrated London News, January 12, 1878. A magician sits cross-legged atop a cloth-covered table and holding two large playing cards aloft in each hand, as elaborately costumed spectators surround him looking on in surprise. One man near the performer holds two large playing cards in his left hand which exactly match the conjuror’s. Matted to 14 x 10 ½”. Old tape to top edge verso.
