DE VEGA (Alex Stewart, 1892 - 1971). Collection of Magic Ephemera, Letters, and Artwork. 1910s – 60s, and including several very handsome and delicately executed gouache on paper images by the Scottish magician showing not only himself, but other magicians or tricks in performance, as well as pencil illustrations explaining several illusions; together with correspondence from A.M. Wilson, Will Goldston, Max Sterling, and others; plus three vest pocket-size notebooks outlining the routines De Vega performed in his earliest shows (1908 – 1911), and a quantity of handbills (including several escape challenges), photographs (including pictures of De Vega in a strait jacket, and another showing him in the company of David Devant and fellow magicians), drawings, programs, business cards, letterheads, clippings, contracts, the band charts for De Vega’s act, and more. Over 50 items, the largest approximately 9 x 11”. Neatly organized. Condition generally good, though some items show significant wear from handling and use. A fascinating group related to the life and career of this multi-talented magician and artist.
