DE VEGA (Alexander Mackay Stewart, 1892 - 1971). Two Magic-Themed Paintings. Oil on panels, the first depicting a colorful street scene with a magician dressed in a blue coat and cream pants performing with playing cards in his outstretched hands, a top hat and coins near his feet, and a folding table with his props stands off to the left, as various spectators surround him looking on with interest, including men dressed in military uniforms, gentlemen in coats and top hats, ladies in bonnets and dresses, as well as several children, with multiple buildings visible in the background. SIGNED “DE VEGA” at lower right of image. Framed to 16 ¾ x 12 ¾”; — The second depicting the whimsical scene of a young boy performing magic in a parlor setting for a small group dressed in Victorian clothing, all gazing intently at the youthful conjuror, whose magic props rest atop a table to the right. SIGNED “A. M. STEWART” at lower right of image. Titled “The First Performance” and INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by the artist on verso: “To Eddie / With Best Wishes / Christmas 1967 / Alex.” Framed to 17 x 13 ¼”. Not examined out of frame.
