HERWINN (William Humpage, 1861 – 1946). Collection of Herwinn Ephemera. Six pieces, 1880s – 1930s, including an ALS from Herwinn to Dick Ritson on his pictorial letterhead; -- two program/handbills bearing Herwinn’s likness on the verso and a list of effects he will perform on the versos; -- a larger format pictorial program bearing a wood-engraved portrait of Herwinn in the upper portion, ca. 1890; -- a four-page program for the Queen’s Jubilee featuring Herwinn along with a magic lantern show and other acts; -- and a small pictorial letterpress broadside for Holtum the strongman, with Herwinn on the bill. The largest item 11 x 8 ½”. Generally very good condition. A good group.
Herwinn’s name is little-known today, but one of his inventions has become an important secret tool of the magician’s trade: the Thumb Tip. Dr. Dawes discussed Herwinn at Length in his “Rich Cabinet of Magical Curiosities” No. 228 (Dec., 1996).
