HOUDINI, Harry (Erik Weisz, 1874 – 1926). Houdini TLS to Alex De Vega Regarding Spirit Photography. Dated July 27, 1920 and written on Houdini’s printed letterhead from his 278 W. 113th Street address. Houdini discusses his as-yet unnamed book, A Magician Among the Spirits, which De Vega would contribute to: “I am writing a book, and have a great deal of material re same [spirit photography], but wondered if you could get sitting[gs] [w]ith one and give me full details.” He goes on, “I believe you could not be easily fooled, so if you feel like going to Crewe, wish you would do so and send me bill for expenses.” He continues, “I have gone to over one hundred [séances], but other stripes might fit it.” Old mailing folds with some chips and separation and a small loss at intersection. SIGNED boldly in ink at the bottom right, “Houdini.”De Vega would eventually travel to Crewe in 1921 and sit with William Hope, the spirit photographer, whom he helped Houdini debunk.
