[MASKELYNE] MORTON, William (1838 – 1938). Archive of Theater Programs and Advertising. 1896 – 1920. Group of programs for variety shows at Hull theaters (The Grand, Alexandra, etc.) managed by Morton, including a diverse array of performers, among them Anna Pavlova, a Russian ballet company, opera companies, and dramatic productions. Small folio and smaller, many with attractive lithographed wrappers. Over 25 items. Together with a reproduction photograph of Morton.Morton’s first success as a theatrical manager was with Maskelyne & Cooke. He arranged some of the duo’s first tours beginning in 1869, and helped establish them at the Egyptian Hall. Morton worked with Maskelyne & Cooke until 1886, and went on to a long career in theatrical management. Many of the programs in this archive feature Morton’s portrait on the front wrapper.
