ROCKWELL, Norman (1894-1978). [The Four Freedoms]. Group of 4 posters. 1943. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government Printing Office. OWI poster numbers 43-46. Posters include: Save Freedom of Worship / Buy War Bonds; Save Freedom of Speech / Buy War Bonds; OURS… to fight for / Freedom from Want; OURS… to fight for / Freedom from Fear. All posters 28 x 20”. Unbacked. All have original folds, a few marginal tears. “Speech” with brown staining at bottom. A-/B+. These images originally appeared in The Saturday Evening Post in 1943. The images were so popular that the War Department used them for fund-raising purposes. The phrase “the Four Freedoms” was borrowed from the 1941 State of the Union address by President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945), where he declared that all people have an innate right to these freedoms, even in the face of dictatorships.
