TWAIN, Mark (pseudonym of CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne, 1835-1910). Original Inscribed Photogravure Portrait, Signed as Mark Twain and S. L. Clemens. [London:] 1. Park Side Hyde Park Corner, S. W.: H. Walter Barnett, Feb. 10, 1900. Portrait of Twain from the chest up in a black suit and tie. Above the image is the following inscription by Twain: “Good friends, good books, + a sleepy conscience: This is the ideal life. Truly Yours Mark Twain”. Beneath the portrait is the following inscription: “Sincerely Yours S. L. Clemens Feb. 10, 1900.” Framed under glass. Sight approximately 11 ½ x 7 ¾”. Frame size approximately 13 x 1 ½”. With the photographer’s embossed stamp beneath the lower inscription by Twain. Fine. An absolutely wonderful item. Barnett (1862-1934) was a prominent society photographer and one of the first Australian filmmakers. His photography was highly sought after, both in his native Australia and London. Many famous personalities sat for his camera, including Sarah Bernhardt, King Edward VII (before he ascended the throne), Robert Louis Stevenson, Hawaiian Queen Kapiolani, and, of course, Twain, who sat for him both in Australia and London.
