[ANTIQUES]. S. RICHARDS. Monthly Catalogue of Antiques, Curios, Etc. on Sale by S. Richards, Friar Lane, Nottingham. Ricardo, Nottingham: S. Richards, [1890-1913]. New Series. No. 1 - no. 304, inclusive. Oblong folios. Profusely illustrated on rectos only. 12 x 9 ½”. [767] pp. 2 volumes. Complete. Bound in publisher’s black cloth bindings with printed paper labels on the spine (some wear, bumping, soiling, text mildly toned with some wear, soiling). Still, a fine example of this rare and unusual catalogue. FIRST EDITIONS. A continuous run of a monthly catalogue issued from 1890-1913. The catalogues appear to be of a regular and similar format – small objects on the opening pages, followed by larger objects and furniture towards the end. There are some very interesting examples of antique furniture. Old catalogues illustrating antiques for sale produced by antique dealers give a fascinating insight into how dealers described, classified and marketed antiques. A very rare example produced by an antique dealer from 1890. Richards’ catalogues were posted to collectors on a regular basis, apparently every month, from the 1880s until the start of World War I. The S. Richards’ catalogues illustrate the very wide range of antiques and curiosities that a leading dealer sold in the period, from a ‘Fine Chippendale Armchair’ and a ‘Queen Anne Dressing Mirror’ to a pair of ‘Rare Silk work Pictures’ and an ‘Early Worcester Cup and Saucer’. Examples of Richards’ catalogues survive at the National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum and in the extensive collections of antique dealer archives at the Brotherton Library Special Collections at the University of Leeds.
