BLACKMORE, Sir Richard (1654-1729). Prince Arthur: An Heroick Poem. In Ten Books. London: Awnsham and John Churchill, 1695. Folio. [xx], 296, [4, Index (apparently inserted)] pp. Approximately 12 ½ x 8”. Complete. Bound in contemporary full paneled calf (rebacked with a possibly later spine, spine tooled in black and gilt, red gilt morocco lettering label, joints cracking, later endleaves, with a previous owner’s critical ink note about this title on p. 296, and a few ink marginal notes throughout; text still quite bright). Near fine. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE WITH THE FIRST ISSUE ERRATA AFTER THE PUBLISHER’S ON PP. [XIX]. Although primarily a respected physician, Blackmore was also a poet who favored epic poetry (Prince Arthur was a thinly-veiled panegyric for William III; this poem garnered criticism despite having three editions, and, in gratitude, William made Blackmore Physician-in-Ordinary).
