Near fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE CONFEDERATE AND LEGAL MEMOIR; PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR’S SON, WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THIS BOOK: “To James S. Pecker [?] my father’s best [?] friend and mine Thomas H. Malone Jr”. Inscribed on the front pastedown. This posthumously-published memoir chronicles the life of Thomas H. Malone, a native of Limestone Alabama. Malone graduated from the University of Virginia, and moved to Nashville to practice law. At the outbreak of the war, Malone enlisted in the Rock City Guards and was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Company A. Shortly after the Battle of Shiloh he was promoted to the rank of Captain and made assistant adjutant general on the staff of General Maury. He remained in this capacity until he was transferred to Wheeler’s cavalry after the Battle of Stones River, as part of the Seventh Alabama cavalry. He was captured at Shelbyville and removed to Johnson’s Island where he remained until the close of the war. After the war, he had a long and distinguished legal career. A scarce Confederate narrative and rarely referenced; not in the standard bibliographies. It is noted online as being limited to 100 copies.
