[4], iii, [1, blank], 1-248, [8, ads] pp. Original printed wrappers (wrappers skilfully re-attached, small paper repair to inner front wrapper, some wear, soiling to wrappers, some foxing to text, several pages unopened and untrimmed with some extending beneath the lower margin of the wrappers). A fine copy of this rare and fragile item. FIRST EDITION. De Fontaine was a prominent (and pro-Southern) Charleston journalist. He was a prolific writer of pro-slavery material before the war and leading up to the attack on Fort Sumter. This book is his war reporting, rife with tales of Yankee outrages against the South.
