DEREN, Maya (1917-1961). An Anagram of Ideas on Art, Form and Film. Yonkers: The Alicat Book Shop Press, 1946. 8vo. 52 pp. Publisher’s pictorial wrappers (light toning, rubbing to wrappers). Fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE CHAPBOOK BY THIS INFLUENTIAL EXPERIMENTAL FILM-MAKER. Laid-in is a 2-page mimeographed program for a film festival of Deren’s films, which took place on January 25 and 26, 1949 at The Provincetown Playhouse in New York. Deren’s films utilized her expertise in choreography, dance, her interests in Hatian Voudou and gestalt psychology to create conceptual art films. These films used various techniques, such as jump-cuts, superimposition, slow motion, and more, to create dream-like images. Her first film, Meshes in the Afternoon (1943) is considered to be perhaps the most influential experimental film in American cinema.
