With fold-out sample of Dr. Johnson’s handwriting in volume I, and fold-out “Round Robin” plate in volume IV. 4 volumes. Beautifully bound in contemporary full light brown calf, boards with blind-stamped checkerboard pattern, boards ruled in blind in wavy line, spines decoratively stamped in blind and gilt in compartments, each with 2 burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, gilt board edges, turn-ins accented in blind, all edges marbled (some light rubbing, occasional soiling to bindings, occasional foxing or offsetting in text). Fine. All volumes with bookplate (“Pandite”) on fps, each signed “John Gibson Surgeon”. This book is one of the most famous biographies and is commonly considered to be the finest biography in the English language.
