Illustrated with engravings by Richard Westall. Fore-edge painting of Tantallon Castle. (xiv), 377, cxxvi pp. Full brown leather, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in three compartments, gilt tooling in remainder, floral gilt borders on covers surrounding blind-stamped fields, gilt demtelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. (Corners bumped, head and heel worn with only small loss, edges rubbed, a few pages lightly soiled not affecting text or illustration, else near fine; hinges strong, text block tight and square, unmarked aside from a couple of brief penciled bibliographical notes on blank pages.) This is the first impression of the first edition (“stop’d” on last line of page 335), and illustrated with an engraved title-page and six plates by Westall. Todd & Bowden 28Aa.
