[x], 1-471, [1, blank] pp. Original beige cloth with author’s facsimile signature stamped in black on upper cover, spine stamped in red and titled in black; original unclipped (“$2.75”) second issue dust jacket (cloth spine toned, soiled, worn, some marginal toning to boards, hinges just starting, some toning in text, ownership signature on title-page (of Edith Halpern); jacket with tape reinforcement on verso of spine, jacket toned, worn, soiled, chipped with marginal tears). A good copy in a fair jacket. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING BOOK with Scribner’s “A” on copyright. It was the basis for the 1943 film of the same name, starring Gary Cooper. Hanneman A18a.
