L’ENGLE, Madeleine (1918-2007). The Small Rain. New York: The Vanguard Press, [1945]. 8vo. 371 pp. Publisher’s full blue cloth, spine stamped in silver, publisher’s unclipped (“$2.50”) dust jacket (cloth spine a bit toned and rubbed, some offsetting to endleaves owner’s signature on ffep; jacket toned (especially at spine), some edgewear and occasional chipping, some minor occasional soiling). Very good. FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR’S FIRST BOOK, INSCRIBED BY L’ENGLE ON THE FFEP: “For Phil May- ‘O western wind, when wilt thou blow that the small rain down can rain.’ Madeleine l’Engle. Jacksonville, January, 1988”. Previous owner’s signature doesn’t affect the inscription. This autobiographical novel was L’Engle’s first book, and the first of her novels featuring Katherine Forrester. L’Engle’s most famous book is, of course, A Wrinkle in Time (1962, Newbery Award winner).
