Black and white illustrations, maps. 672pp. Publisher's full gray cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt crossed-swords medallion flanking gilt motto on cover. Illustrated with 48 full-page plates, six full-page line illustrations, and four folding maps. Laid-in are two newspaper articles, both now in polyethylene film, and both from the New York Herald Tribune of September 29, 1935. One is a review of the book by Vincent Sheean, and the other an advertisement for the sale of the book. Boards show light shelf-wear, front endpapers slightly darkened at gutters only, shadows of articles kept in rear endpapers, else fine; unmarked, tight, square, and clean. The unclipped dust jacket has small losses along top edge, at head and heel of spine, and at corners, and has one closed tear near the bottom of the front panel, else fine.
