Original publisher’s boards, printed paper spine labels (some light staining and peeling to boards, joints cracking, head and heel of spines chipped; former signature erased; some foxing and minor ink stains.) Very good. FIRST EDITION. LAID IN IS A 3-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED FROM LONGFELLOW ADDRESSED “MY DEAR SIR”. Cambridge, Nov. 23, 1880. The letter expresses gratitude for the gift of a book of Selections from Longfellow’s poems assembled by school children. It reads in part, “I hasten to thank you for it, and through you all my young friends, whose names are written in it. Please say to them how highly I am gratified by this mark of their esteem and consideration…” With 2 bookplates, including that of Mary Lecomte du Noüy. Both volumes enclosed in red morocco pull-off box.
