Bound in contemporary in half green morocco over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt (spines a bit sunned, boards somewhat worn, corners bumped, some light offsetting to endleaves, occasional minor soiling in text). Fine. SECOND EDITION, GREATLY EXPANDED FROM THE 1795 FIRST EDITION. Laid-in is an undated manuscript note on plants. Each volume with the armorial bookplate of Robert Mascall, and the 1929 ownership signature of Mary North Chenoweth on the fp. This treatise was intended as a practical guide on the art of planting of large estates and on the establishment and maintenance of laying-out plantations, much of the work is devoted to a catalogue of trees and shrubs alphabetically arranged “This [edition] covers the practical issues of planting, propagating and transplanting, and discusses the choice of trees for different commercial purposes, and the planning and maintenance of hedgerows, as well as ornamental buildings, enhancing financial value; also contains additional information on planting, and on rural ornament (the laying out of grounds), and descriptions of some noted estates visited by the author together with his critical remarks and suggested improvements. Included in this list of estates in Persfield, near Chepstow, formerly the seat of Mr. Valentine Morris; Stowe, near Buckingham, the seat of the Marquess of Buckingham; Fisherwick, the Marquess of Donegall’s estate near Lichfield; the Leasowes where Shenstone lived and died; Hagley near Stourbridge laid out by the first Baron Lyttelton, and the near-by property of Enville belonging to the Earl of Stamford. The second volume consists largely of a dictionary of plants.” Henry 1229.
