MCMURTRY, Larry (1936-2021). The Last Picture Show. New York: The Dial Press, 1966. 8vo. [vi], [1]-[281], [1, blank] pp. Publisher’s full beige cloth, spine lettered in metallic red, publisher’s unclipped (“$4.95”) dust jacket (endleaves with minor offsetting; jacket spine toned with minor edgewear, some light edgewear, soiling to jacket panels). Fine. FIRST EDITION, WITH THE BOOKPLATE OF LARRY MCMURTRY’S LITERARY AGENCY, ZIEGLER-ROSS. According to the laid-in bookseller’s description, this copy came from the estate of Polly Platt, the production designer on the film version (1971) and, at the time, the wife of the director Peter Bogdanovich. Platt reportedly recommended this book to her husband for a film version, as well as actress Cybill Shepherd for the leading role (which turned out to be a fateful choice, as Bogdanovich eventually left his wife to be with Shepherd). Platt would become a good friend to McMurtry, and worked with him several times, as well as being the inspiration for the character Jill in McMurtry’s All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers (1972). Platt was nominated for an Academy Award for Art Direction for Terms of Endearment (1983). An excellent association copy.
