Observationum… illustrated with 46 full-page copper engraved plates (including two folding), engraved vignette on title page, several woodcuts in text. [16], 138; [6], 3-120 pp. Title-page of Observationum printed in red & black. Approximately 8 ¾ x 7 ¼”. Bound together in style in brown calf backstrip over marbled boards, spine stamped in gilt with black gilt morocco lettering labels (spine restored at tailcap, joints repaired, later endleaves, title-page of Observationum repaired at upper margin (no apparent loss of text), else text and plates are generally clean. FIRST EDITIONS OF THESE RARE TITLES. Observationum is a text of practical observations in medicine and surgery, in which Ruysch presents the results of one hundred studies and illustrates many of them with excellent engravings, many of which are undoubtedly enhanced by his injection techniques. The second title is a catalogue of specimens in Ruysch’s anatomical collection, one of the most important of its kind in 17th century Holland, and is the first descriptive account of his famous anatomical museum. Displayed in several rented houses in Amsterdam, the museum was a major attraction for foreign visitors. In 1717, Ruysch’s collection was acquired by Tsar Peter the Great for 30,000 guilders.
