Illustrated with 10 color collotype frontispieces of flowers by Kazumasa Ogawa, 30 hand-colored albumen photographs by Tamamura Kozaburo (with tissue guards), and numerous halftone photographic illustrations. Complete in 10 volumes. Bound in Japanese floral pictorial silk bindings, printed paper labels on front boards, string-bound in the Japanese style, pages uncut at fore-edges in the Japanese style as issued (some general wear, soiling (especially volume I)). Still, fine. THE RARE “YEDO EDITION,” #32/1,000. This beautiful set, describing Japanese history, has chapters illustrating Architecture, cities, festivals, religion, and Japan’s relationship with other nations. Kozaburo’s photographs reflects his herculean effort; he exported “40,000 photographs of various sizes to the Boston publishing house, J. B. Millet. They were required for insertion in the work Japan… it was the first installment of what turned out to be an enormous order of one million hand-colored albumen photographs… Tamamura used over 350 assistants for help with the printing and coloring…” (Bennett, Photography in Japan 1853-1913, p. 202).
