One of the most popular modern western novels, this book was adapted twice for film: 1969, directed by Henry Hathaway starring John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor), and again in 2010, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Jeff Bridges as Cogburn, co-starring Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Haille Steinfeld. There was a sequel to the 1969 version of True Grit, entitled Rooster Cogburn (1975), starring John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn, directed by Stuart Millar.
