[REAGAN, Nancy (1921-2016), her copy]. [CARLYLE, Thomas (1795-1881), contributor]. CARLYLE, Jane Welsh (1801-1866). Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle… London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1883. 8vos. 3 volumes. Contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, red and green gilt morocco lettering labels, marbled endleaves, top edges gilt (spines and joints a bit worn, bumped, some rubbing, light soiling to boards, hinges starting, a few gutters overopened). Very good. FIRST EDITION. NANCY REAGAN’S COPY, WITH HER OWNERSHIP INKSTAMP ON ALL FRONT BLANKS. Her address on the inkstamp is 1669 San Onofre Drive in Pacific Palisades, CA. The Reagans built this house in January 1957, when Ronald was the spokesman for General Electric, and this house had every electronic gadget available at the time. They put the house up for sale when Reagan was elected president his first term (it eventually sold in 1982). Jane Welsh Carlyle wasn’t published in her lifetime, but she was considered one of the best letter writers of her time (Virginia Woolf called her one of the “great letter writers.”)
