Illustrated. xii, 95 pp. Bound in publisher’s black cloth backstrip over publisher’s pictorial boards, spine lettered in gilt (gilt a bit faded, some light rubbing, endleaves a bit toned). Fine. Chemised in slipcase (bookplate on chemise, “W.S.R.” FIRST EDITION OF WHITE’S FIRST BOOK WRITTEN SOLELY BY HIM; INSCRIBED BY HIM WITH A WHIMSICAL DRAWING OF A BIRD IN A CAGE ON THE FFEP: “The copy includes sketch of the author’s bird, asleep E. B. W. [drawing of bird, captioned “Baby”] May 1929”. Above this inscription is the signature of the recipient, author “Elinor Milnor Parker June 1, 1929”. This is White’s first book written by himself alone, only preceded by Is Sex Necessary? (1929) co-written by James Thurber.
