CHANDLER, Raymond (1888-1959). Typed Letter Signed. La Jolla, California, June 20th. 1956. Addressed “Dear Swanie” (Chandler’s agent, H. N. Swanson). 1 4to page on 1 4to sheet of “Hotel Del Charro” stationery on brown paper. Signed “Ray” at bottom right in black ink. With Chandler’s corrections in ink and pencil. Approximately 11 x 8 ½”. 2 vertical and 1 horizontal creases, some other faint creases, several small pin holes at upper left corner. Fine. CHANDLER WRITES TO HIS AGENT; THIS LETTER INCLUDES A PASSAGE ABOUT WORKING WITH ALFRED HITCHCOCK: “... Hitchcock, who I thought didn’t like my work on Strangers on a Train, told a London reporter I know that he had “made a great mistake in hiring Chandler. I should never have hired a real writer.” What he means is that nothing in one of his pictures must suggest that there is any talent but Hitchcock’s at work. I think he is the most conceited man I ever met.” Superb content.
