CHANDLER, Raymond (1888-1959). Typed Letter Signed. La Jolla, California, April 18, 1957. Addressed “Dear Eddie” to Edgar Carter, H. N. Swanson, Inc. 8523 Sunset Boulevard Hollywood 46 Calif. 1 and ½ 4to pages on 2 4to leaves of Chandler’s personal stationery on light blue paper, rectos only. Signed on the second leaf “Ray”. A few ink corrections in Chandler’s hand. Approximately 10 ½ x 7 ¼”. Both pages with 2 horizontal creases, upper left corners creased and with numerous pin or staple holes, a few scattered pin holes at upper margin, red ink notation (“HGV P”) at upper right corner of both sheets in an unknown hand. Fine. Edgar Carter was one of Chandler’s agents at the Swanson agency (Swanson himself was Chandler’s primary agent). This letter concerns the sale of rights to Chandler’s character (presumably Philip Marlowe), for what sounds like a possible TV series, but still leaves Chandler free to sell the rights of his published material to other TV studios: “It is understood, of course, that Warner’s are buying a license to use the character and nothing more and that they do not propose to forbid my sale of TV rights to anything I have published.” The letter discusses other related business matters.
