WELLESLEY, Arthur, Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Manuscript (in an unknown hand) Proclamation nominating Joseph Lobb, Esquire to the position of Deputy Lieutenant for the town (and county of the town) of Southhampton. 1846. Signed “Wellington” at lower right corner. Manuscript proclamation nominating Joseph Lobb, Esquire, to the position of Deputy Lieutenant for the town (and county of the town) of Southhampton. Document on vellum. 1 vertical and 2 horizontal folds. Approximately 12 ½ x 9 ¾”. Written on a single side only, in black ink, with a small title on the reverse. Blue pound/shilling paper stamp at the upper left corner, with a red, presumably wax, seal at the bottom right next to the signature of the Duke of Wellington. A few other faint, official stamps present. Moderate faint wrinkling and general uneven browning, heavier to the blank side. Some scattered soiling and minor faint staining. Two tiny holes present in the lower horizontal fold crease. Paper slightly curled. Near fine. A piece declaring that Joseph Lobb was nominated for a Deputy Lieutenant position, with all the official language that accompanies such an announcement. Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington, is perhaps best known for his actions and leadership at the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon, although he did also serve brief stints as Prime Minister in Britain and in the House of Lords. Entry in an 1846 edition of the London Gazette does mention this commission signed by the Lord Lieutenant of the County of Southampton (which Wellington was serving as in 1846).
