HURD, Peter (1904-1984). Marauders of the Sea. Edited and with an Introduction by N. C. Wyeth… New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons (spine stamped “Grosset & Dunlap,” [1935]. 4to. Illustrated throughout by Hurd. [320] pp. Publisher’s full black cloth, front board and spine stamped in blue, pictorial endleaves (some wear to binding, endleaves toned and dampstained, some occasional soiling, wrinkling in text). Good. WITH TWO ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWINGS BY HURD, ONE INSCRIBED BY HIM. One drawing on the half-title is of a pirate flag, the other drawing, on the verso of the half-title is of a pirate drawing his sword. The pirate drawing is inscribed by Hurd: “For John Peter & Stevie from their grand parents Jack & Polly White along this this hasty sketch by that old buccaneer of the plains Peter Hurd October 1969”. Housed in black cloth clamshell case. Hurd was an accomplished artist who studied under N. C. Wyeth (and eventually married Wyeth’s daughter, Henriette). Best known for his Southwestern art and landscapes, he also painted the official portraits of President Lyndon B. Johnson (who rejected the portrait, which is now in the Smithsonian) and the Saudi Arabian King Faisal.
