WAIN, Louis (1860-1939). Signed Ink Drawing of a Cat. [England, n.d.]. Pen and ink drawing of a cat in profile, inscribed by Wain to the left of the drawing: “Yours very Truly Louis Wain”, and written by Wain at the lower left “With Compliments”. On white paper. Approximately 6 x 7 ¾”. One vertical and one horizontal creases, upper edge chipped, some toning, foxing, soiling, a few marginal tears at creases, verso is worn with some paper residue. Good. Wain was a popular artist of children’s books, known exclusively for his drawings and paintings of cats. Perhaps today he is best known for continuing his artwork during his failing mental health, and his artwork reflected his skewed perceptions. Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed him in the 2021 biopic, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.
