PRATT, John (American, 1911-1986) “Creole Girl” from the Ballet, The Octoron Ball. Not dated. Watercolor and graphite on paper. Signed lower right. Albert Roullier Art Galleries, Chicago, Illinois (label verso). Sight 20 x 14”. Frame 26 ½ x 20 ½”. Pratt was born in Canada. He exhibited paintings executed in the Magic Realist style at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1930s. In 1940, he was the supervisor of the costume department for the Federal Theater in New York. It was there he met his future wife, Katherine Dunham. Pratt returned to Chicago with Dunham and they were married in 1941. Dunham and Pratt were close friends with artists Gertrude Abercrombie, Karl Priebe, and Julia Thecla. Pratt exhibited at the Renaissance Society, part of The University of Chicago in 1941. Surface dirt. Not examined out of frame.
