KAYSER, Elliot (American). Herd Immunity. 2020. Signed. Clay, underglaze, feldspar inclusions. 11 h x 21 w x 8”. The clay has been infused with colored feldspar, when fired, the feldspar “bursts” through the surface of the ceramics. Inspired by the 2019 COVID-19 Pandemic, the artist visually represents “infection” into the surface of the clay, hence the title. “My path to Japan began with a vase I saw at the Phoenix Art Museum, a piece of traditional Shigaraki ware. At the time I was working on developing a sculptural clay body and the glistening inclusions in the clay of the vase sparked my imagination. I began experimenting first with ways to replicate the effect, reverse-engineering that naturally occurring feldspar in the Japanese clay, and then creating my own colorful variations.” Unusual patterns and textures inherent. Overall good condition.
