AFTER GAUGUIN, Paul (French, 1848-1903). Cylindre au Christ et à l’Idole (Stela in honor of Christ and the Idol). Conceived 1894. Cast circa 1960s. Bronze with brown patina. Marble base. 18 ½ h x 5 ¾ w x 5”d. Overall with base 19 ¾ h x 7 w x 6”d. Cast incised signature back lower edge. Indistinct foundry mark. Sculptural relief with abstract depictions of male figures and Christ on the cross. In 1891, Gauguin sailed to Tahiti to live like the natives. Important sources of inspiration were the art of the South Sea peoples and the combination of mystical natural beliefs with European Christianity.
