KORAN, Al (Edward Doe, 1914 - 72). Al Koran’s Book Test. Gimmicked version of the 1960 edition of the Pocket Oxford Dictionary, bound in gilt-lettered grey cloth, and specially prepared to tell the mindreader which page is turned to by an audience volunteer without forcing. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED on the front pastedown by Koran: “Bill / from / Al” and accompanied by a note stating, “From Al Koran / N.B. Thread at bottom of page.” “Bill” is likely Billy McComb, Koran’s colleague, contemporary, and close personal friend.
Koran’s career was cut short by cancer, but after becoming a professional magician and mind reader, his career was an enviable one, including appearances for Winston Churchill, Elizabeth II, and many high profile television performances. Very few props from his performing career have survived.
