DOWNS, T. Nelson (1867–1938). T. Nelson Downs’ Talking Kettle. Omaha: David P. Abbott, 1920s. When the kettle’s spout is held to the ear, a ghostly voice emanates from within, answering questions posed to it. Period components loosely housed within. Height (with handle) is approx. 8”; diameter 8”. Timeworn with dust, scuffing, surface abrasions; texture inherent. The bottom rudely taped on. Not in working condition. Good. Includes a typed letter regarding provenance; owned by T. Nelson Downs and likely donated to the Egyptian Hall Museum of Brentwood, Tennessee by Eddie McGlaughlin, Downs’s close friend and fellow magician. An unusual historical artifact with important provenance.
