Browne (some marginal browning). Original blue-green pictorial wrappers (some occasional light soiling, wear, a few ads foxed, a few parts with ownership signature on front wrapper or a few text leaves, several spines repaired, plates generally foxed). Still, a near fine set. Provenance: various owners - different ownership signatures. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS, nearly complete with all text pages, preliminary leaves, plates and with nearly every advertisement according to Hatton and Cleaver except for the following: part I - rear ads loose but present, the Waterlow ad with numerous cuts at lower margin; part II - page 1 of the Advertiser is repaired, part IV - second issue of Household Words slip; part V - a few tears to ads and wrappers; part VI - “Little Church” plate has some hand-coloring; part VIII - with an extra Waterlow ad; part IX - first page of Allsop ad has a short tear; part XIV - lacking Household Words and English Cyclopedia slips, Waterlow ad is loose but present, the Two Widows ad is blank on front instead of having the text about Frank Merryweather; part XV - lacks Household Words slip; part XVI lacks Grace Aguilar slip; part XVII - Advertiser pages 5-8 are the wrong issue or part; part XVIII - the front wrapper has a repair; part XIX-XX - lacks Household Words slip, the Ransome ad in the rear has only 8 pages of 16, and the Cassell’s ad is missing the final page (p. 16) of the ads.
