Frontispiece portrait. xviii, [1]-[266] pp. Beautifully bound in full blue crushed roan over beveled boards, boards ruled and paneled in blind, spine lettered in gilt and ruled and tooled in blind in compartments, four raised bands, blind turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt (joints and spine with some wear. FINE. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE EDITOR ON THE FIRST BLANK: “G. E. H. Vernon from the Editor. [Bishop Wilberforce of Oxford]” With Vernon’s bookplate on the fp. Also with the bookplate (on the ffep.) and ownership inscription of Gilbert R. Redgrave (1844-1941), son of painter Richard Redgrave and a bibliographer and art historian. Also with the bookplate of Robin de Beaumont (1926-2023) book expert, collector and dealer. Margaret Godolphin (1652-1678) was a British courtier, and was a close friend of Evelyn’s. He had written a biography of her, praising her virtuous nature in a time of depravity, but never published it. The manuscript found its way into the possession of Bishop Wilberforce of Oxford, who, rumor has it, carelessly left it at William Pickering’s shop, who then published it.
