Illustrated with 28 steel engraved portraits. viii, [1]-516, [2, blank] pp. Bound in publisher’s special presentation binding of full brown pebbled morocco, boards double-ruled in gilt, with elaborate floral gilt borders and gilt central crown and scepter motifs, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt board edges, blind turn-ins, coated yellow endleaves, all edges gilt (spine dull, joints worn and slightly starting, boards edgeworn with some soiling, front hinge broken, rear hinge starting, bookseller’s description affixed to fp, some foxing to text and plates). Good. FIRST EDITION, PUBLISHER’S PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY BOHN’S WIFE ON THE FIRST BLANK: “Mrs Clark with the affectionate regards of Elizth Lamb Bohn York St March 15th 1852”. The editor of this work, Mary Howitt, was also a writer of children’s literature, known for writing the famous poem, The Spider and the Fly (1829).
