London: William Heinemann Ltd, [1934]. 8vo. 275, [3, blank] pp. Publisher’s full black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, in the rare publisher’s unclipped (“7/6 Net”) dust jacket (minor rubbing, faint soiling to boards, light toning to endleaves, faint erasure mark on ffep, marginal crease (paper flaw?) to p. 17-18; a few tape repairs to jacket verso, spine toned with marginal chipping, panels edgeworn with several marginal chips and creased tears, some soiling to rear jacket panel). Very good. FIRST EDITION OF THIS EARLY NOVEL, IN THE VERY RARE FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET (without the remainder price (“3/6”) stamped on the spine). This novel was described by Greene as his “first overtly political novel.” He revised this novel in 1948, and all subsequent editions have these revisions.
