London: Heinemann, [1958]. 8vo. 273, [1, blank] pp. Publisher’s full blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, publisher’s unclipped (“15s Net”) dust jacket (minor rubbing to cloth, text lightly toned; jacket creased at front flap near price and fore-edge, jacket spine toned, some rubbing, rear jacket panel toned, slightly soiled). Near fine. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF GREENE’S MOST FAMOUS NOVELS. Gift inscription by the granddaughter of Kaiser Wilhelm I, Princess Viktoria Louise of Prussia, later the Duchess of Brunswick (1892-1980) on the ffep. This darkly comic novel lampooned MI6, for whom Greene worked in 1941. It is the basis of the 1959 comedy directed by Carol Reed, and starring Alec Guinness, Burl Ives, Maureen O’Hara, Ralph Richardson, Noel Coward, and Ernie Kovacs.
