GREENE, Graham (1904-1991). Stamboul Train. London: William Heinemann Ltd, [1955]. 8vo. 307, [1, blank] pp. Publisher’s full black cloth, spine stamped in gilt (light rubbing to binding, top edge of text block foxed). Fine. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE (THE EARLIEST OBTAINABLE VERSION) WITH THE MISPLACED COLON ON P. 140 - VINCENT STARRETT’S COPY WITH HIS SIGNATURE ON THE HALF-TITLE AND HIS SHERLOCKIAN BOOKPLATE ON THE FP. Starrett (1886-1974) is perhaps the best-known expert on Sherlock Holmes, and was a mystery writer and columnist. A superb association. In the original (virtually unobtainable) issue, the character, Quin Savory, was called “Q. C.” Another Heinemann author, J. B. Priestley, thought he was the basis of this unflattering character and threatened to leave Heinemann, so the name was changed.
