[ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919), association]. CARMAN, Bliss (1861-1929). Poems by Bliss Carman. Boston: L. C. Page & Company, 1905. 4tos. Portrait frontispiece in volume I. 2 volumes. 293; 292 pp. Text printed in black and red. Publisher’s brown boards, front covers stamped in gilt, spines with brown gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands, top edges trimmed, others uncut (some rubbing, toning to bindings, some foxing in text, several leaves unopened). Very good. FIRST EDITION THUS, ONE OF 500 COPIES SIGNED BY CARMAN (THIS COPY UNNUMBERED). PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT ON THE FFEP OF VOLUME I: “To Alexander Smith Cochran an American of whom his fellow Americans have a right to feel proud, from one of them Theodore Roosevelt July 29, 1915”. Cochran (1874-1929) was a prominent manufacturer, yachtsman, and philanthropist. IN ADDITION, CARMAN HAS INSCRIBED EACH VOLUME WITH A FAIR COPY OF A POEM. An excellent association copy; Roosevelt and Carman were friends and correspondents; it is quite likely that this elaborately inscribed copy was a gift from Carman to Roosevelt, who, in turn, presented it to Cochran.
