STEINBECK, John (1902-1968). Of Mice and Men. New York: Covici Friede Publishers, [1937]. 8vo. 186, [6, blank] pp. Publisher’s full brown cloth, front board and spine in black and brown, publisher’s unclipped (“$2.00”) dust jacket (light rubbing to cloth binding, lower corners lightly bumped, rear cloth board soiled near bottom; jacket spine toned, some edgewear, small chips and creased tears to jacket, rear jacket panel soiled). Very good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE WITH THE “BULLET” BETWEEN “88” ON P. 88 AND “PENDULA” ON P. 9. This classic novel was a critical success when published, and has been adapted several times for both stage and screen. It has also been the subject of censorship and bans, due to its perceived vulgarity, and its themes of euthanasia and supposed “anti-business” bias.
