Angels in America, parts I and II, debuted on Broadway in 1993; he won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. In 2003, Kushner adapted these plays for an HBO miniseries, directed by Mike Nichols, starring Meryl Streep and Al Pacino; Kushner won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series or Movie. Angels in America is about the AIDS crisis under the Reagan administration, and its impact on the Gay community.
