Illustrated with engraved title-page with 5 vignettes (of 4 apostles and the descent of the Holy Spirit), 45 woodcut portraits of Church Fathers within text. 538 pp. Misnumbered at p. 64 which jumps to p. 77, but still complete. Bound in contemporary full calf boards, boards double-ruled in black, rebacked in modern brown calf, spine lettered in gilt (boards worn and chipped, some soiling, spine sunned and lightly worn, hinges starting, endleaves apparently missing, some edgewear toning, soiling to text). With the bookplate of the Bristol Education Society Museum on the fp. and the armorial bookplate of A. Gifford of the Museum on the verso of the title-page. Very good. FIRST EDITION. An important guide to the Church Fathers, which provides biographies of these fathers, their most famous sayings, and a list of their writings. This begins with biographies of Philo Judaeus and Josephus, and continues through the early Greek and Latin fathers to Anselm of Canterbury, Rupert of Deutz, St. Bernard, Peter Lombard, Saint Thomas Aquinas. Lupton was a chaplain in the English Army, stationed in the Low Countries and Germany, and was later the vicar of Sunbury, Middlesex.
