[SENDAK, Maurice (1928-2012), subject]. KUSHNER, Tony (b. 1956). The Art of Maurice Sendak 1980 to the Present. [New York:] Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, [2003]. 4to. Profusely illustrated. [224] pp. Publisher’s full blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, publisher’s unclipped (“$60.00”) dust jacket. Fine. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY SENDAK TO HIS FRIEND AND BRITISH EDITOR, JUDY TAYLOR HOUGH, ON THE HALF-TITLE: “For my darling Judy on her Birthday Aug. 12, 2007 Maurice Sendak”. Sendak and Taylor Hough met in 1961, and became fast friends. She tirelessly championed the European publication of Where the Wild Things Are (and, later, his other titles), and shepherded it through the publication process at The Bodley Head. She even saved his life at one point: in 1967, Sendak was with her on a promotional tour for Where the Wild Things Are in the U. K.; after the day’s promotions, he knocked on her hotel door at 2 a. m., and collapsed in front of her. The hotel doctor said he had indigestion, but Taylor Hough disagreed and called for an ambulance; it was a good thing she did, because it was discovered that Sendak had had a major heart attack. He then received the care he needed. A superb association.
