ADAMS, Thomas Boylston (1772-1832). Autograph Letter Signed (“Thomas B. Adams”) Addressed “Sir” to “Mr. G. Luzac.” The Hague 30 November 1795. One 4to page on one leaf of watermarked laid paper. Approximately 9 ¼ x 7 ¼” Two vertical and numerous horizontal creases, some thumbsoiling and light edgewear. Fine. This cordial letter acknowledges the receipt of a letter from Luzac requesting an American passport for “Mr. de Persyn,” but Adams politely states that he only has the power to grant passports to American citizens, but offers his assistance in any other matter in which he can assist Mr. Luzac. Thomas B. Adams was the third and youngest son of John Adams, the second President of the United States, and First Lady Abigail Adams. Thomas was a representative to the Massachusetts legislature from 1809 to 1811 and served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. Thomas was also secretary to his brother John Quincy Adams, who was appointed the United States foreign minister to the Netherlands by President George Washington, and continued with John Quincy when the latter was appointed minister to Prussia by their father, who would become president two years after this letter was written.
