DE VEGA (Alex Stewart, 1892 - 1971). Archive of Correspondence, Illustrations, Photographs, and Notebooks. 1910s – 60s, and including dozens of letters from noted magicians and magic dealers, sketches for stage illusions and parlor magic apparatus, lists of tricks, sample programmes, dozens of photographs (both candid and studio images) of De Vega performing (some showing him in a strait jacket), handbills, flyers, scenery charts for a marionette show and much more. A small amount of material relates to the Zig Zag Girl controversy of the 1960s, centered on De Vega's idea which predated even Harbin's famous illusion. Also included are several notebooks, entirely filled, picturing and describing the working of various tricks, include De Vega's patter for the tricks he presented, or outline the running time of the various shows he presented. Over 250 items, many well-worn, but generally in good condition. A fascinating trove of material related to stage illusions, performance, and the secrets of many magic tricks from a noted Scottish performer. A large archive of great interest that should be seen.
