Bound in contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards (spine almost entirely perished, 2 strips of leather re-attaching boards, front board detached, binding worn, text and maps a bit toned, with occasional foxing, thumbsoiling). Fair. SECOND EDITION. THIS COPY WAS ONCE OWNED BY ROYAL NAVAL OFFICER, JOHN DUFF MARKLAND (1780-1848), WITH HIS SIGNATURE ON THE VERSO OF THE FFEP. Markland had a long and distinguished career in the Royal Navy, eventually reaching the rank of Superannuated Rear Admiral, after commanding various ships and taking part in numerous battles. He was eventually awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath. An excellent association.
